The Nigeria Customs Service has claimed to have retired 34 senior officers including five Deputy Comptrollers-General of Customs (DCGs) who had earlier resigned their offices voluntarily. A statement Friday by the agency's Public Relations Officer, Wale Adeniyi claims that the exercise was part of on- going re-organizationin the Service which is one of the core mandates of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd). The affected DCGs are John Atte MFR, Ibrahim Mera OON, Musa Tahir mni, Austin Nwosu and Akinade Adewuyi. Three others affected are of the rank of Assistant Comptroller-General; they are Madu Mohammed mni, Secretary to the Nigeria Customs Board, Victor Gbemudu, Zonal Coordinator Zone 'A' and Bello Liman, Assistant Comptroller- General, (Headquarters). The rest are of the rank of Comptrollers serving in Customs Headquarters, Zonal Offices and various Area Commands. The five DCGs who constitute the management of the service, resigned on Thursday. The Nigerian Times has a copy of their resignation letter dated October 29, 2015 and addressed to the Chairman, Nigeria Customs Service Board. The said: "We the under listed officers currently on the rank of Deputy- Comptroller General of Customs, met today and unanimously decided to voluntarily retire from service having risen to the privileged rank of Deputy-Comptroller General". The officers thanked the president of the federation for having given them opportunity to serve. Sources say their resignation may not be unconnected with the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to by-pass them and appoint Col Hammed Alli (rtd), an outsider, as new helmsman of the service in August following the retirement of then Customs boss, Dikko Inde Abdullahi. Before Alli's appointment, Atte, who until his resignation was DCG, Finance Administration and Technical Services, acted as boss of the service. The Comptroller-General however stated that the retirements were part of measures to kick-start the repositioning of the Service for improved performance. #thepanaceareports
