BOLANLE AMBODE ADVOCATES SUPPORT FOR WIDOWS, ORPHANS
Wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, has described the plights of widows and orphans as challenging, thus requiring courage, prayers, discipline and support of the society to see through.
She made the remarks at a one – day seminar, tagged, "A day with widows and orphans", organized by the Naval Officers' Wives Association (NOWA), as part of activities to mark its 50th anniversary.
Mrs. Ambode, represented by Mrs Fatima Bamigbetan, noted that no class of people required more attention and patronage than widows and orphans, who found themselves in the unfortunate situation because of the supreme sacrifice paid by their bread winners.
According to her, "widowhood is a tough challenge and being orphaned a trauma and agony for children in the prime of their lives. Life can truly be lonely for the widow just as it can be for the orphan. This is why they need as much companionship and welfare assistance as they can ever get".
She commended the association for the unity of its members and achievements in the past 50 years and for giving prime consideration to the welfare of widows and orphans.
Speaking earlier, the National President of the association, Mrs. Theresa Ibas, pledged that widows and orphans would always be considered by the association, adding that various empowerment schemes were being packaged to make life more meaningful for them.
She thanked Mrs. Ambode for the items donated as well as other donors who had supported the association over the years.
Highlights of the event was the presentation of awards to some recipients, including Mrs. Ambode.
The event was attended by the Flag Officer Commanding Naval Training Command, Rear Admiral A.A. Osinowo, who represented the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibas; Dr. (Mrs) Josephine Akhigbe; Mrs Shola Oladele, representative of the wife of AIG Zone 11, among others.
