Sen. Chris Ngige: The coming of a job giver.

Written by Abu Maigoro

The consequences of unemployment impact harshly on the quality of life of an affected individual and families. Also the social cost of retrenchment by the previous adminstration, corruption, and prolong unemployment are said to be the primary source of poverty, youth recklessness, prostitution, racketeer, terrorism and all sort of transgressions.

Another significant disadvantage suffered by mature-age job seekers is that their skills tend to be lost over time, particularly as they are more likely to experience longer periods unemployed. And many job seekers do not have access to training to enable them to develop and acquire skills. And the rate of unemployed graduates are increasing annually.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), The unemployment rate measure the number of people actively looking for a job as a percentage of the labour force. Therefore, The overwhelmed burden of unemployment rate soared 23.9%, About 42m of the total population of 178m are jobless and 80% are youth which approximate to 34m.

The federal ministry of Labour and employment is at a peak of responsibility to countenance this great challenge.

However, a reformist is needed to carry the burden and revive this institutions. We need someone with a new idea, strategy and integrated approach on both formal and informal sector.

Obviously, Sen. Chris Nwabuaze Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment is that reformist per excellent who has all the requirements to performed. He has done it before as a Governor of Anambra State. He displayed selfless service, patriotic conducts, daring exploits and intellectual coupled with Christian virtues.

Within three years Dr. Ngige presided over the affairs of Anambra state, he practically redefined government and provided a different kind of leadership that was unprecedented in the history of the state. He resisted the pressure by some powerful forces/external machineries to squander the state resources. While in the senate, Ngige sponsored bills and contributed logically in debates especially as regards to health and the level of unemployment,he as well provided jobs for several others. He is a crusader of social justice and never bows to duress.

For this reason, job seekers should have a smile on faces. The job giver is now available. He had a lot of empathy for Nigerian youth ; he knew what it was like stay jobless too. You could noticed on his face everywhere he goes. The APC campaign promise of three million job every year must be fulfilled. With the level of enthusiasm from Dr. Ngige, I am optimistic that there would be no disappointment.

When corruption was dwelling in the system , qualified applicants were not given chance only those with "who you know credentials" are given the offer to work.

He came at time when Nigeria labour market is craving for opportunities.

And many job seekers are targeting the formal sector- and the formal sector seems to be very slow in job creation whereas informal sector which comprises of different skilled of artisan is growing rapidly in terms of generating employment. According to NBS, the informal sector accounted for over 90 per cent of total jobs in the third quater, and were predominantly in rural agricultural activities and its does not require to spend much time and resources.

However, less attention has been paid in the past to a possible mechanism for improving aggregate productivity for the industries and factories in the formal sector. The two most populous countries on earth China and India have no abundant natural resources like Nigeria but they have tackled their unemployment problems with different strategies and methods. China has used the massive manufacturing and export approach while India is using the service industry to meaningfully engage her massive population.
