MOSOP Commends Buhari's Commitment To Clean Up Ogoni Land
The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni (MOSOP), has commended the Federal Government for its renewed commitment to speedily implement the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on cleaning up of Ogoniland.
MOSOP gave the commendation in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Mr Fegalo Nsuke in Abuja on Sunday.
The organisation also commended the Minister of Environment, Mrs Amina Mohammed for the cooperation and commitment demonstrated when she visited Ogoniland recently.
It pledged the cooperation of the Ogoni people to the federal government and relevant agencies involved in the implementation of the UNEP report.
"We note that the delay in the implementation of the UNEP report has had some damaging consequences on the health of our people, including an increased mortality rate resulting from organ failures.
"We believe that these negative experiences could have been averted had the government given the desired attention to the report when it was released in Aug. 2011.
"We will be counting on the assurance given by the Minister of Environment that the implementation of the report will be launched by the present government within weeks.''
He called on all stakeholders, including multinational oil companies to demonstrate similar dedication to and work towards the success of the programme.
It will be recalled that the minister of environment was in Ogoniland on Friday to solicit the cooperation of the people, preparatory to the launch of the clean up by President Buhari.
