Barr. Solomon Dalung
Minister of Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalung, yesterday said those who stole public funds should return them in their own interest, saying the era of massive looting of public resources in the country by the elite was over.
Speaking at the Mathew Kukah Unity Cup Competition held at the Giginya Memorial Stadium Sokoto at the weekend, Dalung said the present administration had zero-tolerance for corruption, adding that those who misappropriated public funds should as a matter of urgency return the loot.
According to him, such funds would be utilised judiciously to execute projects across the country.
He admitted that the 16 years of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) misrule could not be fixed in six months.
Dalung stressed the need for Nigerians to be patient and give President Muhammadu Buhari time to fix the country.
He challenged politicians in the North to invest their wealth in the development and sponsorship of sports rather than manipulating the youth to foment violence.
"The political elite in the North should not divert their wealth in sponsoring confusion and manipulating the youth but should invest it in sports so that we can develop leaders that would take over from us tomorrow.

"We have so many wealthy people in the North but the problem has been the misapplication of wealth. I appeal to the investment community in the North to redirect their energies in sports so that the youth can be gainfully employed and of course most of the crises in the North would be taken care off.
"You cannot underestimate the importance of sports in fostering national unity. It is only sports that has the capacity to mobilise Nigerians even when they are fighting eachother," he said.
He urged the youth in the North to embrace sports and build a career because sports was now a big business.
Dalung emphasised that the present administration would accord priority grassroot sports development and had devised various empowerment programmes packaged for the Nigerian youth.
In a remark, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Mathew Kukah, said the unity football competition was a youth development project aimed at bringing Christian and Muslim youths together to establish social relationship and develop their talents.
At the end of the football competition, Sokoto Football club defeated their Katsina counterpart and was given a trophy.
